Pint Glasses
The pint glass is so aptly named as they hold 20 fluid ounces– a British imperial pint, the American pint glass typically holds 16 fluid ounces. The pint glass is one of the most widely used beer glass and as result they can be found in a wide variety of shapes and sizes – the most well known of which are the conical (also knows as nonic) and the dimpled mug.
The conical pint glass has a slight ridge or an outward dimple near the top of the glass which aids in gripping and storing the glasses. Many conical pint glasses are oversized to leave room for the head, and feature a line or marker to indicate how much fluid is a correct pint.
Pint glasses are typically used for a large variety of beers, including Ales, Lagers and Stout beers. There are indeed versatile glasses and due to their popularity are often reproduced as giftware and memorabilia.
Interestingly, in the United Kingdom it is illegal to sell a pint that is not in fact 20 fluid ounces!
