Yard Glasses
One of the most distinctive beer glasses, yard glasses are typically sold as a full or a half yard. The full yard glasses hold 3 pints (1.4L) and the half yard holds 1.5 (.7L). Yard glasses are also called known as a Yard of Ale or a Coachmans Quaff, and came about so that stagecoach drivers could drink without letting go of the reigns.
Yard glasses feature a rounded, bulbous bottom with a thin narrow stem leading to a flared opening at the top. A full sized yard glass is three feet (1 meter) tall. They are accompanied by a stand, which is required as they’re unable to stand on their own.
The yard glass is commonly used for beer drinking competitions in Australia and Britain, the winner being the person that can finish the yard quickest.
